Does a Dorm Room Need a Mezuzah?
February 01, 2021Question:
I currently live in a dorm at college, do I need to affix a Mezuzah on the door to my dorm room? I'm worried they will make a hassle about leaving a mark on the door frame.
Answer:
Hi Daniel,
A dorm student is not technically obligated to put up a mezuzah because the dorm is not his or her permanent place of residence.
This is different than a tenant paying rent who must put up a Mezuzah because they are living on the property as if they are owners of sorts. Dormers, on the other hand, have use of their rooms much like they have use of the university library or classrooms. As a dormer, your status is something less than a tenant and you are not technically obligated to put up a Mezuzah.
That being said, Mezuzahs bring blessing and protection. They are also a sign that you are proud of your Jewish identity. So it's definitely a good idea to put a Mezuzah on your dorm room! If the administration doesn't allow you to make holes in the door frame ask if it would be ok to use double sided mounting tape.
