Governor Crist’s Mezuzah
October 22nd, 2007 . by Aaron
Florida governor Charlie Crist (not Jewish in case you didn’t know) has come under fire for hanging a Mezuzah on the entrance to his capitol office. He received the Mezuzah from his friend state Rep. Adam Hasner (Jewish). Of course the ACLU is not happy about this. I have linked to a few stories about this below.

So… what do you think? Should the Florida capitol building have a Mezuzah? Post a comment and let us know what you think.
Isn’t it “sacrilegious” for me personally to wear a cross around my neck? Doesn’t it go against my religion and my tradition? If you’ve ever seen Brendan Fraizer’s “The Mummy” where the guy is first noticed by the dead, he holds up all these amulets and prays/chants in all of these different religions. That’s Ok because he’s studied the religions enough to know how to at least speak them.
My mezuzah is in my bedroom doorway because I don’t want morons knocking on my house door and asking what it means even though I kinda understand the connection between magic bunnies, zig-zag pastel painted chicken eggs and reserections with that ever so popular “come as you are Sunday Best” Ok, maybe I don’t.
I think it’s hypocritical to pretend to respect religios icons that you neither understand, respect or hold sacred, especailly those out-dated tablets Moses bought down to the table.
This entire article you forwarded to me only makes me more not want to admit which god-forsaken State I live in!
Joyce, why are you so sure that he doesn’t understand the meaning of the Mezuzah? Is he less capable than you of understanding it? After all, as a Christian he also believes in the “Old Testament”.
I am not weighing in on whether I think it is appropriate to place it on the state house. But your comments imply that even if he would have wanted to put it on his personal home, it would be wrong because he isn’t Jewish.
I just don’t see logic in that.
It’s so great to be living in Florida, where the government does its very best to please everyone! Why, right here the state issues pro-life license plates (Christians, Religious Right), the governor hangs a mezuzah on his office door (Jews, of course), and practically every utility company answering machine greets you with, “For English, press one” (Hispanics).
Elections are coming soon, fellas! Quick–do something for the atheists and any others you may have missed.
