As of writing this post back in 2007, MezuzahStore.com was number 3 on Google for the search term “mezuzah.” That made us the highest-ranking website actually selling mezuzahs at the time. The first two results were Wikipedia and JewFAQ, both informational websites.
I was very excited about this for two reasons.
First, and most obvious, I am the owner, and better visibility meant more people could find our store. But the second reason mattered even more to me. For a long time, some of the websites ranking highly for mezuzah searches were selling mezuzah scrolls of questionable quality. With Mezuzah Store moving up in the search results, it meant more people would be able to find a reliable source for real kosher mezuzah scrolls.
That still matters today. A mezuzah is not just a decorative Jewish item. The mitzvah depends on the kosher scroll inside the case, written on klaf (קְלָף, parchment) by a qualified sofer STaM (סוֹפֵר סת״ם, Jewish scribe). If you are not sure what separates a real kosher scroll from a printed or questionable one, our guide on what makes a kosher mezuzah is a helpful place to start.
Looking back, this was a small but meaningful milestone for our website. It showed that people searching for mezuzahs online could find a store that cared not only about the outside case, but also about the kosher klaf inside.
Who knows, maybe one day we will reach number one. Wikipedia, watch your back.
