The Alter Rebbe (Superior) Gassot Chabad Tefillin Set with Rabbeinu Tam order is our finest Chabad pair prepared in the Rabbeinu Tam arrangement, made for the one whose minhag is to don a second, additional set of tefillin (תְּפִלִּין, phylacteries). It is built to the same superior standard as our Rashi pair: 42 mm gassot batim in the Chabad 4x4 size, perudos compartments closed with the Chabad dalet knot, hand-worked straps, and parshiyos written by a sofer who specializes in ksav Alter Rebbe.
The difference lies inside the boxes, in the order of the parshiyos. This is a set for the one who wishes to fulfill the mitzvah at the very highest level, im yirtzeh Hashem for generations of davening.

Rabbeinu Tam Tefillin, the Second Additional Pair
Rashi and Rabbeinu Tam differed over the order of the four passages sealed inside the batim (בָּתִּים, leather boxes). The everyday pair follows Rashi, and to honor both opinions at the highest level of hiddur, the widespread minhag, especially in Chabad, is to also lay a Rabbeinu Tam pair after davening.
This set is that second pair. It is worn by one who already keeps this hanhaga, laid once the Rashi pair is removed, and it should be stored and clearly identified apart from the primary pair so the two are never confused.
Alter Rebbe Gassot Batim, 42 mm Chabad 4x4
Like our Rashi pair, these boxes are gassot, pressed from a single thick piece of hide at the larger 42 mm Chabad 4x4 size, chosen for beauty and for the stringency of fully-formed letters. Each must sit perfectly square, meruba, on its titura (תִּיתּוֹרָא, base), a shape only true gassot leather can hold.
Because they are gassot, the boxes can be re-blackened and repaired over generations rather than discarded, im yirtzeh Hashem serving for generations. The craftsmanship behind each one is shown in how gassot batim are made.
Perudos Shel Rosh, Dalet Knot, and Avodas Yad Retzuos
The shel rosh is perudos (פְּרוּדוֹת, separated), fully divided and reinforced with gid (גִּיד, sinew), and closed with the Chabad dalet knot in the exact form this minhag preserves. It is the most mehudar way to build a head-box.
The retzuos (רְצוּעוֹת, straps) are avodas yad (עֲבוֹדַת יָד, hand-worked) and blackened by hand on both sides al pi halacha, matching in quality the boxes they secure. Every part of the set carries the same standard of hiddur.
Ksav Alter Rebbe, Handwritten on Kosher Klaf
The parshiyos are written in ksav Alter Rebbe by a sofer who specializes in this script, with careful attention to the tagin and the form of every os, on genuine klaf (קְלָף, parchment), the same sacred material used for our kosher mezuzah scrolls.
Because a single mistake in tefillin can affect kashrus, every pair is reviewed by a certified sofer STaM and verified by computer before it ships.
Completing the Pair, Custom-Fit for You
Most who wear a Rabbeinu Tam set already own a primary pair. If you need it, the matching Alter Rebbe Rashi tefillin is the everyday pair, and our wider range of Chabad tefillin sits together for easy comparison.
Because fit and comfort matter on a set worn for generations, we are glad to help size it before it ships, and our guide to tefillin checking helps protect it for years. Families keeping the minhag at home will also find matching Chabad mezuzahs, and Mezuzah Store is a family-owned Judaica shop honored to prepare tefillin at this level.
